Core prompt: California Giant Berry Farms has signed an agreement with FoodLink to provide traceability data and smartphone friendly

California Giant Berry Farms has signed an agreement with FoodLink to provide traceability data and smartphone friendly labels, through its item-specific tracking solution on every carton of the company’s strawberries grown in the US.

FoodLink will create QR coded labels for 'clamshell' strawberry cartons. The code will have information pertaining to the specific growing location of the packaged berries and will allow trading partners and consumers to trace the berries back to their source.

Consumers will be able to use a smartphone to scan the code and learn the origin of any California Giant berry.

According to California Giant, the new system is expected to serve as a food safety tool enabling consumers to learn more about the origin of their food.

California Giant vice president of operations Lucky Westwood said the company has worked with FoodLink as well as its clamshell providers to create a better way of achieving its goals with the project.

"We hope that this enhances the consumer's confidence and overall experience with our berries. In the meantime, our daily attention is focused on a food safe production system based on prevention and training throughout the company," Westwood said.
